Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the status quo of Social Responsibility (SR) activities of Korean hospitals and to examine the relationship between SR activities and Social Performance (SP).
Methods: SR activities of hospitals, the independent variables of the study, consist of three components; workplace responsibility, environmental responsibility, and socio-economic responsibility. SP, the dependent variables of the study, contains five variables; employee satisfaction, internal communication, patient satisfaction, hospital image, and hospital reputation. The sample used in this study consisted of 55 private teaching hospitals and 33 municipal public hospitals. Data were collected with self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using t-test and regression analysis.
Results: The main results of the study were as follows. First, the level of SR activities was significantly different in terms of the bed size and hospital type. Second, SR activities have significant positive correlation with SP. Third, the two variables of the workplace responsibility and working condition have significant effect on three dependent variables of the study; employee satisfaction, internal communication, and hospital image.
Conclusion: The results of the study imply that hospitals need to enhance internal SR activities first prior to trying to conduct external SR activities for the community.
